How  SHAADS® Skylight Covers were Invented

FAMILY - OWNED  . . .

SHAADS® Covers is a family-owned business founded by inventor Christian Koenitz. The idea for our New Jersey-made interior skylight cover came from a real problem in my own home: too much heat, glare, and harsh sunlight coming through the skylights. I needed a way to protect my family and my show dogs from UV rays and excessive heat, but before having both bad knees replaced,  I didn't want to spend hours on a ladder. Including going up and down the ladder several times, carring power tools, a level and many parts to installing a complicated skylight cover.  I first tried a roll-out product, but it did not work well or give me the finished look I wanted. Even turning up the air conditioning was not solving the problem.

 The skylights were still bringing in harsh sunlight, heat, and UV exposure that affected my family, my pets, and my furniture.  Making it very difficult to wach TV or look at my computer screen with-out a shade cover. Running the air conditioning longer and colder only added to the cost. That is when I knew there had to be a more simple, better-looking solution . .

So came the idea for SHAADS® covers and our patented installation system

As a  problem solver with years in construction, I created a revolutionary way to install  " Skylight Covers Products "    that use  (only 4 custom patended brackets) with 4 screws. This innovation slashes installation time from hours to mere minutes, all while keeping the consumer's needs front and center. I understand that not everyone is a builder, so I designed these covers to be super easy to install and remove in just seconds . With a passion for using  quality materials, my products bring elegance and value to your spaces.  SHAADS® started with inventing skylight covers. They can reducing harsh sunlight, glare, heat, and UV exposure, so you can actually use the room again. At the same time, the real wood frame trims out the skylight cavity for a more elegant, and finished look to your room. From there, the same base design I expanded to doors, basement glass, and windows, offering privacy and comfort, with no moving parts to break down or dangerous strings. This makes SHAADS® covers more efficient while offering a more cleaner look, adding a worry-free option for homes like mine, with children and pets. 

 

From my years as a builder, I knew a beautiful product also had to be practical. As I was developing SHAADS® skylight covers, I realized there were other great features to offer the homeowner. Installation time could be shortened - installs in minutes, costs could be lower by factors like no need for powers tools and a level -  just a philips screw driver is needed. I made it simple so most homeowners may not need to pay an installer or handyman. The covers can also be moved to another application.  They are made with real wood to complement your floors, trim, or furniture, not of plastic, vinyl, or aluminum like some other skylight cover options. They're also great for DIYers', if that's your thing.

 I didn't stop there. I tackled  Simple but Elegant mounting interior covers for doors, basement glass, and windows using the parts of the origional patented design. SHAADS® Interior Covers offer a stylish, hassle-free installation without power tools,  adding heat reduction in summer and cool reduction in the winter.​​​​

Evolving Product Line

SHAADS CURTAINS VS SHAADS_edited_edited.

​I was asked by a friend if I could make interior covers to cover the glass in doors and side panels.  I throught why stop there so I added basement glass, and even windows to my creation. The next challenge in the evolution was mounting. Those surfaces can't be handled the same way as a skylight cover. Wanting to keep simplicity, their stylish custom look, and keep the time and cost down, I designed a patented custom plate that allows a vertical installation hang for doors, basement glass and windows, unlike the horizontal skylight cover hanging. Over time, I've patented and designed several new ways of attachment that require. no power tools to keep installation for the homeowner simple.

​My new accessory designs for attachment of our SHAADS® interior covers to door, basement glass and window, stayed in line with no-need-for-power-tools and a level, keeping the process straight forward and easy to install.

 

On metal doors, there's no need to drill holes into the metal of the door, helping avoid damage while still keeping it easy to install for those who say they're not handy ( just out of the box and click it on) . We now proudly offer high-end SHAADS® interior coverings, made in New Jersey, for skylights, doors, basement glass, and windows to customers nationwide, all with that same simple install.

** Life before SHAADS® Covers **

Before SHAADS®, my journey was nothing short of exciting... As a young real estate entrepreneur, I dove headfirst into the world of real estate and construction. While earlier I went to Junior college for computer science and IT support, then made a dynamic transition into property acquisition and renovation in real estate. Through the years, I was always solving problems, working hands-on, and looking for better, simpler less time consuming ways to get things done correctly. While in real estate, I listened closely to the everyday problems from homeowners and other realtors. Things like not finding a curtain that fits the narrow glass beside a door, or repainting when a new baby came where I just added a skylight cover, which no longer would match — changes that add extra expense.  Also, rooms baked by sunlight that just weren't livable without a real solution.

This finally was the reason for SHAADS® interior skylight covers. One day, I left a female Akita upstairs in the sunroom. Didn't realize the skylights had no covers. When I got home, the heat was intense. She was okay, but it scared me. That moment sparked everything, and with my knees not what they used to be, not abling me to stand on a ladder for long periods of time, I knew I needed a safer, simpler way to my skylights.​​​​​

Hi there, I come from an executive medical background, always focused on meeting people’s needs. But let me tell you, I’m definitely not as handy as Christian, and that’s exactly what drew me to his products. The only interior covering I ever managed on my own was a makeshift curtain in the basement. pinned up for privacy, nothing more. But now, with SHAADS, everything has transformed. Our manufacturing facility is right here in New Jersey, and I look forward to bringing my skills to SHAADS interior coverings.

With my analytical background in healthcare, I learned to look closely at details and outcomes. Working with so many people taught me to value practical solutions that actually work. When I saw SHAADS, I saw that same kind of thoughtful problem-solving. That's why I chose to help bring it to market.
